Foundation is one of those products that can look perfect on one person and completely wrong on another.

Texture, coverage and finish matter just as much as shade, so I looked at these four with very different personalities—from weightless everyday bases to something much more glam.

1. e.l.f. Soft Glam Satin Foundation

Rating: 10/10

This is easily the most balanced formula of the group. The texture feels much lighter than you might expect from a traditional foundation, almost somewhere between a skin tint and a classic liquid base. Coverage starts around medium but builds nicely where you need a little more help.

What I like most is the satin finish. It does not look aggressively matte, but it also avoids that overly glossy effect that can make foundation feel obvious on the skin. The formula is non-comedogenic and designed to stay breathable rather than cakey, which makes it especially appealing for everyday makeup.

If I wanted one uncomplicated foundation for work, errands and dinner afterwards, this would probably be my pick.

2. Maybelline Super Stay Lumi-Matte Foundation

Price: around €14

Rating: 9/10

Maybelline sits a little closer to the “proper foundation” side of the spectrum. It blends easily, gives buildable coverage and feels surprisingly lightweight considering how polished the result can look.

The finish is the interesting part: it aims for that modern soft-matte look rather than a completely flat, powdered face. I would reach for this one when I want my complexion to look smoother and more perfected, but I still want a little life left in the skin.

It also makes more sense for longer makeup days than something extremely sheer. You can keep one thin layer across most of the face and build only around redness or uneven areas, which usually looks far fresher than applying a thick layer everywhere.

3. MARS High Coverage Foundation SPF 50

Price: around €9

Rating: 6.5/10

This is the budget option that clearly prioritises coverage. It hides more with less product and can be useful if pigmentation, blemishes or uneven tone are your main concern.

But there is a trade-off. Compared with the softer formulas above, it can feel heavier on the skin, and the original test also noted some oxidation after application. That means I would be particularly careful when choosing a shade—what looks right immediately may deepen slightly after a few minutes.

For a short evening look or anyone who simply prefers a more perfected base, it still has a place. For effortless everyday “my skin but better” makeup, though, it would not be my first choice.

4. e.l.f. Halo Glow Liquid Filter

Price: €17

Rating: 10/10

Technically, Halo Glow is not really a standard foundation—and that is exactly why I like it here. It is closer to a complexion booster with light, buildable coverage and a luminous finish. You can wear it alone, under foundation, mixed into another base or strategically over makeup.

On its own, it gives skin that glossy, almost freshly-moisturised look without completely covering natural texture. For glam makeup, I especially like the idea of using it underneath a more traditional foundation: you still get coverage, but the complexion does not lose all its dimension.

It is definitely the glowiest option in this group, so very oily skin may prefer using it selectively rather than across the entire face.

Which One Would I Pick?

For everyday makeup, e.l.f. Soft Glam Satin Foundation feels like the easiest all-rounder: light, flexible and polished without being too much. If you want more coverage and longevity, Maybelline Super Stay Lumi-Matte is the stronger choice.

MARS High Coverage wins on affordability and coverage but comes with more compromises, while e.l.f. Halo Glow Liquid Filter is the fun option for anyone who wants radiance more than camouflage.

The real winner depends on what you want your base to do. Sometimes the prettiest foundation is not the one that covers the most—it is the one that still lets your skin look like skin.
